Day 27 Tuesday in Gallito :)

Hey all :)

Sorry I'm delayed, no excuses... Just busy....

I could live in Gallito, And my life there literally would consist of playing and crafting with children all day long :)

The Medical team was off to Santa Tomas today so that left me and Ben in charge :) lol, but today was amazing, the men and boys (2 13 year olds) tackled the rest of deconstruction and some minor rebuilding projects

We had a busy morning And then lunch then our focused moved to bible school and what a bible school it was....

The verse for today was

"... God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment"
1 Tim. 6:17

And lordie were there a lots of crafts to enjoy today :) we made animals (bunnies, chickens, butterflies, bumblebees) we made little families, which consisted of cutouts that were gingerbread looking) joined together by hearts, or Gods love. We made flowers complicated flowers I might add that were labor intensive, and a couple of other little odds in ends...

All the crafts were supposed to represent something God has provides us for our own enjoyment like flowers and family :) it was so fun

Here are some pictures...

That's all for now, more later... I'm off to dinner :)

Stay tuned !!!

Day 26 Monday in Gallito :)

Hey all :)

Sorry I'm a day behind again even though I promised I'd keep it together... This group from Huntington is educating me on card games, first UNO now Rooke, need less to say we play every night, and my team continually shames Ben's team, so our intern rivalry is just right :)

Anyways Monday in Gallito we did lots :) we began deconstruction of the church, yes I know you don't generally associate mission teams with deconstruction, but to build sometimes you've got to take apart the old first... Lol

We did a little of that, while the medical clinic was going on in the Sunday school building, the saw over 74 people!!! With everything from rashes, to headaches, to problem with breastfeeding. It was really amazing, we learned that everyone in Gallito loves cough drops, and I mean everyone, whether they had a cough or not... But I guess I would want them too if I could never go out and buy them for myself

The bible school lesson yesterday, stayed in tune with our theme this week of God is love, we used 1 John 4:10 " this is love; not that we love God but that he loves us..." we made for projects the one I worked on was one large heart, that the children got to decorate with crayons, and stickers and tissue paper :) it was supposed to represent God's heart, the second project was to decorate a pair of heart shaped glasses, we used these glasses to admire all the wonderfully things God's love had provided for us... another project was a paper with a cross, and on that cross a pair of hands holding a heart, on the heart each child wrote their name and underneath the cross on the piece of paper, we wrote God holds my heart in his hands. The final project was to make a heart wreath, because God's love ,like a cicrle, has no end... It was really cool to watch them enjoy making each project :)

And it was even cooler that I was put in charge of teaching the lesson, which provided me the opportunity to have over 42 little Peruvian children circle up around me and attentively listen to me read them scripture, and talk with them about the love God freely gives to us... It was an amazing experience that I will treasure forever :)

Here our some pictures from our first day...

More to follow:)

Day 25 first of many days in Gallito :)

Hey all :)

Today we went out for church in Gallito :)

It is one of the largest churches we're seen so far, it's going to be a super exciting week because the Huntington group and the people of Gallito have formed lasting relationships, they greet each other like family :)

We also did the intro to bible school, which went really well, here are some pictures

To begin our week, the kids decorate our "Dios es Amor" or God is love banner :)

They kids really enjoyed the craft...

Tomorrow we head back for some more fun :)

Day 24 the First Presbyterian church from Huntington WV arrived today :)

Hey all ;)

Today marks our first day with the mission team from First Pres, from Huntington West Virginia, their church will actually be down here two consecutive weeks, this week they will be doing medical clinics, clean water/water purification education, and bible school... And next week their construction team and bible school sports camp comes down :) it's going to be really exciting because we're going to be spending a ton of time with their sister church, so we'll be working in the same place a little longer and we'll have time to get to know the pastor and congregation even better!

We work up early this morning for final prep, beds were made, last minute items were bought and a final clean sweep was given to El Jardin, then it was off to the airport to pick up the team... It was a pretty exciting trip to the airport, a professional soccer team was coming in to Iquitos today, from Lima, they played tonight at the local stadium against the Iquitos team... I don't know who won, but I'm sure I'll find out tomorrow :) once we had collected the team it was back to El Jardin... The group immediately started unpacking... And oh boy did they bring a lot of stuff, holy cow it was crazy... They had three army ruck sacks full of medicine, and two army ruck sacks full of bible school supplies... Their water purification buckets arrived by mail beforehand... It's crazy there is so much stuff everywhere...

The medical clinic will run Monday through Thursday... In three separate villages, this team will hand out vitamins, pain relieves (ibuprofen), anti-parasite medicine, antacids, cough drops... And that's just the stuff we bagged tonight...

As far as bible school goes, I'm so excited for it :) their theme is "God is Love" and how God shows his love for us!!! It's so well planned, we're doing
At least three crafts a day, their are simple and fun for all ages, and they all use hearts, we're making heart necklaces, heart wreaths, heart baskets, we're even making heart chickens :) it's so cute!!! You can totally tell that the women who planned out the bible school is a retired elementary teacher, she's so detailed oriented, everything's organized, yet she still managed to keep everything simple and fun, it's going to be a great week, and since this is the first week where the pastor's wife isn't really running bible school, I'll be spending a lot of time working with, translating, and even teaching bible school which I'm really excited about :) so stay tuned for pictures because there bound to be pretty cute lol

The Huntington team has a whole section within whose's only job is to Deal with water safety education and water purification plans, they bought fifty personal water purification systems that consist of two buckets : a larger plastic bucket with a spicket at the bottom, and a smaller clay bucket, which sits inside the other, which actually flitters the water, it seems pretty neat, I'm sure I'll learn more details about it this week. They also have with them some educational packets, about a new system for cleaning river water, the information comes out of a Holland based research company. They say that if you place 1L clear plastic bottles on your corrugated metal roof under peak sun, for six hours the UV radiation reduces the amount of bacteria present in the water, but only after the water has been run through cheese cloth to remove dirt particles and other impurities. They attest that it does not eliminate the problem, but it does reduce some of it, and let's be honest anythings better than river water... It seems really interesting and a lot of the men working within this section have backgrounds in water purification, for example one sells industrial grade chlorine in all forms, solid, liquid and gas. So I expect to learn a great deal this week :)

Well that's it for me folks, nightty night :)

Stay tuned...

Day 23... We say goodbye to our new friends from Columbia :(

Hey all :)

Today our day started super early at 4:30 am to be exact...

Why you may ask were we up so early... Well I'll tell you, today is the day the Eastminster group from Columbia left, but today is also the day of the San Juan festival here in Iquitos, San Juan Day celebrates the life of Saint John the Baptist, but down here it really means one heck of a party... We're talking like Carnival, whole streets are blocked off not by police but by the shear number of people standing around, so needless to say we felt for the airport with plenty of time to spare, plenty of time, if only we had know that the plane that was supposed to be leaving at 6:50 was delayed till 10:15... Lol such is life I guess, so we spent I good deal of the morning sitting around in the airport waiting for this groups flight to be allowed to clear security, in Peru they don't allow you to pass through security till an hour before your departure time, so we sat around for a while, but it was kind of nice to have a little extra time with this group, they were so fun :) once they finally made it through security did Pam, Ben and I finally start heading back to El Jardin

Once back here turnover started for the next group that's arriving tomorrow from Huntington, West Virginia. We had to change all the sheets, grocery shop, get enough cokes and waters for the week, do all the administrative paperwork and inventory and store all the donated items left by Eastminster, and let me tell you they donated a ton of items... Over a hundred and twenty-seven T-shirts, a hundred and fifty toothbrushes, over the counter medicines, bibles, children's toys, shoes... They have left us a great deal to inventory and distribute :) that's what I spent most of my afternoon doing... I'm happy to report we got everything we needed to get done, done. And Ben and Pam even got in their afternoon naps, I passed on a nap because I've learned that if I sleep in the afternoon it takes me forever to fall asleep for the night and that just not a good thing when your keeping the hours we are :)

Tonight Fpr dinner were having Juanes which are the traditional meal of San Juan day, it's a ball of rice with two small fried eggs of eyes, and an olive for a nose with a piece of chicken sticking out the bottom of it, then it's wrapped up in a bananas leaf, its supposed to represent the head of John the Baptist, and sounds pretty gadget to me so I'm pretty excited... Well thats really it for today :)

Stay tuned...

Day 22... Off to Tamasyauco for the day :)

Hey all :)

Again sorry for the delay, but after this one I'm back on track, and hopefully will stay that way the rest of my time in Peru, if the internet allows that :)

On thursday we went to Tamasyauco, which is another village close to Iquitos, members of the mission team from Eastminster, which I learned is one word lol, had been to Tamasyauco before, about six years ago... And we're interested to see how it was holding up, so since our work in Santo Tomas was done, we went to explore a little while in Tamasyauco.

We met the Pastor of the church and his family, they showed us their church and the attached sunday school building. We also visited the SCOTA school that is out there. After we finished our tour of the church we went around the city a little, we saw the local hospital, which is really more of a clinic then a hospital, we saw a local school, and we just wandered around, it was very interesting to see...

It really is like a mini Iquitos because they have roads, well as close to roads as you get around here... And they have motokars, and large scale markets and little shops where you can buy bottled water and other snacks :) the group really enjoyed their tour, once we were back at El Jardin it was time for a little nap for the interns... Lol I think both Ben and I are starting to realize that Friday feeling Pam always talks about... After a weeks work out in the sun you're pretty much exhausted but too bad because it starts all over again on Saturday :) lol

After our naps we woke up refreshed and ready for our last dinner and devotions with the group from Eastminster in Columbia SC, the final devotions was fitting and we all took a second to reflect on the relationships we'd formed and spirit we'd grown in a matter of days, I will say it was nice to see meet all of the members of this team but especially some of the younger members of the team, which included seven people under the age of nineteen :) it was nice to see their reactions, to share in their excitement and joy, and most especially to be encouraged by their never-ending energy... They were always willing to go and do anything from playing with the local kids, to hauling lumber, to putting up walls... they did it all, while smiling :) they were awesome and we're gonna miss them!!!

Well that's all forks :) stay tuned

Day 21 our last day in Santa Tomas

Hey all :)

Again sorry this was late, but I'm almost caught up from our lack of Internet :)

Wednesday was our last day in Santa Tomas :)

It was also my little sister Bridget's birthday :) happy birthday Hun,

Back to Santa Tomas we went today,I have to be honest... Today was hard on me, Pam didn't come to site with us so the interns were in charge... Scary I know lol
One of the members of the team from columbia even called me his little Pam of the day... I never stopped moving, someone was always calling my name or lost in translation, I struggled a little today, almost lost my cool a couple times, rolled my eyes and said the serenity prayer a lot... This job is sometimes taxing, it challenges you, I was so exhausted by the end of the day that I was acting as some would say foolish, you know that point when your so tired all you do is laugh because if you didn't you'd just cry, that was me at the end of the day...

Seeing as all the lumber was already on site we spent our time actually fixing the church... Oh and By the way Natalie monitoring a construction site is dangerous business lol, let's be honest what do I know about construction... I was quite pleased with myself when I remember the Spanish word for posthole digger , a cabador, I even got to use one...what?!?!

No but in all seriousness somewhere along our day I found myself trying to translate a conversation between Charlie the Columbia mission Team leader and Andres the Peruvian equivalent to our contractor, we were discussing the spacing that needed to be left between the wooden boards, to allow room for the boards to swell during rainy periods, well hey you learn something new everyday, because I sure didn't know boards, huge dense boards of Amazonian wood would swell in the rain, I also didn't know that you have to hang a window frame level if you want it's wooden shutter-like doors to open and close, or if you want the window to latch... I learned that lesson the hard way... But all and all the construction moved along we changed all the boards on the front and back of the church and left the material for their congregation to finish the rest :)

It was really neat to see Americans and Peruvian working side by side to come together and build this church, the sense of victory experienced when those wall finally made it up, was amazing, and trust me I know, because I translated it back and forth lol, even though this project took us a lot longer to complete than anticipated, we left Santa Tomas grateful that we had the opportunity to share in this congregations fellowship, it was truly inspiring to see our teams work together to get those walls up.

At bible school, which we conducted right outside the church that was being reconstructed, chainsawing hammering, and wood crashing was our background noise as we were working with the children of Santa Tomas :) today, we cover the story of Jonah's disobedience that lead to him being swallowed up by the great fish, or whale depending on your interpretation. The pastors wife Maria read the passage to the children, then she'd ask them questions, she always begins bible school by asking the children Quien Vive? Or Who lives? And all the children will shout Cristo! Or Christ! There is something so amazing about watching children, some not even five years old have such a passion and interest in the lord, our craft today was a to cut out whales and create little pockets on each whale, a flap really where each child could stick there little Jonah figure :) it went over really well and the kids really seem to understand the message :) here are some pictures from bible school...

Maria doing the lesson...

The kids mostly paying attention... Lol

Allie Grey helping them color their whales :)

all in all today was a hard, long, amazing day... There were points I struggled, got frustrated or overwhelmed, their were points where I wanted to grab a can of bubbles and runaway... Go off and play quietly with the children, but walking back out of Santa Tomas understanding the joy I felt helping people, whether it be by translating for them, or coloring a whale with them... Truly made all the stress of the day worth it... And when it boils down to it, work especially work done for the lord isn't always supposed to be easy... I think the stress, mental and physical exhaustion and the strong emotions brought out by what I'm doing down here is supposed to challenge me, maybe even change me...

On a side not relating solely to me, and for a little added humor... A also learned today it is best to lead by example... So everything I'd tell someone to watch their step because let's say it's slippery walking down to the boat... I'd slip and demonstrate, or when we were walking back from dinner I fell into one of the holes I always tell people to avoid, don't freak out mom I didn't really fall, it's not a huge hole or anything... It was more like getting my foot stuck... But since I was in flip-flops I do have a small bruise, after devotions me and Pam were walking around the El Jardin property and I fell again, this time with purpose I have a nice little bruise going down my leg now, but hey I didn't bleed so in my book today was a success one the coordination clumsy scale... It's really ironic, one of my jobs down here is to prevent people from stumbling and falling around in the sometimes dilapidated areas, and now every time we go somewhere everyone in our groups the foreign mission teams, Pam and Ben spend all their time trying to keep me from hitting the floor... It's really just too funny!!!

Well that's all forks, stay tuned :)

Day 20 our trip to Santa Tomas

Hey all :)

Sorry all of these are being posted late... I'm trying to catch back up...

On Tuesday we went to the village of Santa Tomas, the columbia group bought wood and nails, so the could replace the boards that we eaten away by termites, they planned to spend two days in this village with these people forming relationships and building a church, and teaching bible school, it was a very cool little village unfortunately for us, the weather on Tuesday was not so cool...

I took the late arriving group back to the Butterfly farm to visit my crazy no shoes wearing lady :) too bad she was no where to be found and someone else had to lead us around the property, thankfully I've now been to the butterfly farm enough times to realize that I know the whole tour by memory, for example did you know there are over 135 species of butterfly indigenous to the amazon region but the Peruvian government only let's Pilpintuwasi bread 17 of them... After we finished our tour we headed to Santa Tomas where the rest of our group was already hard at work, hauling lumber

And we had to haul over a hundred pieces of dense Amazonian wood... It was quite a morning full of lots of sweating :) charming right lol, after we were all good and tried from getting all that lumber off the boat, and hauling it the entire length of the town 3/4 of a mile, we all collapses for a lunch break :) then it was time for a bible school prep session :) then bible school

The pastors wife Maria, taught her bible school about the creation story... Our craft was to have the children make a mini book of the seven days of creation showing what God made on each day... For example on the 1st day God separate light from darkness... And so on through the seventh day

Here are some pictures from our first day in Santa Tomas

Day 19 working around El Jardin

Hey all :)

Again sorry for the delay... Shoty Amazonian Internet lol

Any who, it's Monday and we spent the morning going over the plans for the rest of the week, today we'll work on the El Jardin property doing yard work, prepping for bible school, and working on the new construction project :)

This group from East Minster Church in Columbia SC help sponsor the new construction project, which will become the new pastor resource center and overflow housing for the mission teams :)

I was inspired by the drive and determination shown by this team, they wanted to get right down to work racking leaves and cleaning the yard, this may seem insignificant but the El Jardin property is quite extensive and with all the rain we've been experiencing it is very important to maintain the leaves left on the group to minimize the ability for water to collect and mosquitoes to bread, we filled about 2 dozen trash bags full of leaves and palm frowns and other yard mess...

Some of the people on this team spent the day on the construction site digging trenches and clearing trash...

We also planned and prepped bible school and visited the SCOTA School

All in all it was a great day :)

Day 18 the rest of the team from Columbia arrives

Hey all :)

Sorry this is delayed our Internet was down....

Anyway we went to Pilpintuwasi today which means house of the butterflies :)

Here are some of the things we saw...

Then their was the crazy Austrian woman who runs the farm...

She's a botanist by trade and came to Peru 20 years ago to study the host plants of various butterfly species, the host plant is the specific plant a butterfly lays it's eggs on... She spent six years doing this, during that time she fell in love with Peru and never left :) she's kinda a crazy nature woman, living away from civilization in the woods with her animals, I've been to the butterfly farm three times and never have I seen her wear shoes or a bra... The picture above is of her and Pedro the Jaguar

There was also this monkey that followed us around displaying his male dominance, at one point he demonstrated for us the golden shower, which is when he relieved himself and then bathed in it, it was quite charming... He also tried to steal a member of our groups purse :)

Crazy lady and her baby coati, an Amazonian Raccoon

She has other monkeys too, but this one was much cuter than our golden shower friend

After we got back from the airport we collected the remaining seven members of the mission team from East Minster church in Columbia SC
Had some lunch and took the new arrivals on their own city tour then we turned in early :)

That's all forks

Day 17 the Columbia team arrives... Sort of...

Hey all :)

We're back to business as usual around here, we woke up early for final prep for the Columbia team that arrived today, EL JARDIN was all system go today :) Villa, our amazing handyman filled up the team coolers with cokes, water and ice and we arranged them in the team common area so that everything would be ready for their arrival, the ladies Ina and Maria who do the cleaning and cooking, were busy going out and buying last minute things like more pineapple and lettuce... Not too mention chicken, you can never have enough chicken lol

Apparently in the hurry to get everything ready this morning Villa Forgot to close the tap on the cooler, the one you use to drain them out at the end of the day, well I was walking through the little common area and about busted my head opens slipping into a puddle of water, well silly me couldn't figure out where all that water was coming from, never occurred to me to check the coolers, but the second Pam surveyed the scene she knew just what had happened....

After we got the water up, it was off to collect our group from Columbia SC, only problem was, not all of them made it on their international flight leaving from Miami... So we collected 12 out of 19. We got them settled in and had some lunch, then took them on a tour of the El Jardin property, took them to seethe construction site that they'll be working on a little this week... And then it was off for our city tour:) it was an overcast day here, Diego all the rain we've been having and it was actually kind of cool which was nice...

We're about to have dinner and then devotions :) It's just business as usual down here in Iquitos and full steam ahead :)

Tomorrow we go to the butterfly farm :) and then we're having lunch out on the town, tomorrow is also the day when the remain ing seven members of the mission team from Columbia will finally make it to Iquitos... I'll let you know how it all turns out :)

Day 14 the Cista Cocha Zoo ;)

Hey all :)

We went to the zoo in Cista Cocha today, it was about a thirty minute motokar ride up the nawto highway :)

It's not your typically zoo, some would probably argue it's not a zoo at all, it lacks organization, direction, support facilities and in several cases a path on which to walk, often your left to truck it in the mud or battle the bugs, I managed to get yet another pair of toms stuck in the mud, but I'm happy to report, I'm getting pretty good at washing my shoes by hand lol, another odd thing about this zoo...

It had a beach... (Can you still call it a beach if it's not the ocean?)

Despite the oddities of the zoo the animals were neat and we had a nice time.....

There were jaguars ....

There were gators :) even in Peru Nancy I find the gator nation is everywhere

There were Macaws.... But they weren't very chatty :)

There were monkeys... Oh lordie there was a ton of monkeys :)

Small ones...

Big ones...

Really cute ones...

Ben got his fill of monkeys....

We saw other animals too... Like

Capybaras... The worlds biggest rodent : /

These things are BIGGER than my dog... Lol

An infestation of these would be a major problem lol

We also so the Peruvian version of a raccoon :) their much cuter over here...

And then we saw another twist on something we have back in the states...

Ants!!! lots of Ants!!!

Ants working hard...

Lots of ants working hard...

Yes I know I shouldn't be this excited about ants...

So just because everyone would mock me if I ended my pictures of the Zoo with pictures of insects, especially insects that weren't even on display in the zoo...

Here look at something the zoo actually prides itself on...

A cayman... Yay for the big lizard... If you ask me the ants were cooler lol

Oh and a... Ahhh I forgot again, 'insert name here'

This animal is apparently like a cow... Hmmm maybe it's just me but I don't get cow from this... Do you? I guessed it was related to an anteater but then again maybe I was just a little too focuses on ants today

I'm my defense the fact that I was so focused on the ants helped me avoid getting bitten by ants, which is quite impressive seeing as they were everywhere, so at least theres that :)

The zoo was really neat, and we had a great time, the rest of the day was a wash because right after we got back from the zoo the rain started again,a pouring thunderous rain, but such is life I guess lol, at least it didn't rain while we were at the zoo :)

That's all I got focus :) hope you enjoyed my ants as much as I did

Stay tuned :)
